What does User Experience Mean to your website?
User experience (UX) is the overall experience of a person using your website. This includes the look and feel, page layouts, call to action and general functionality of what the website offers the user.
On average, the website has 8 seconds to engage the user which then determines what action they will take.
If the information, product or services you are trying to provide does not match their requirement easily and with ease, then your chance to convert on the transaction is often lost. That transaction could be as simple as a phone call or even for the user to submit a contact form, however if the user gets caught up with bad user experience, the chances for this action decreases significantly.
To get a greater user experience on your website we recommend the following steps;
- Researching your competitors to find out what they are doing well & how your experience on their website makes you feel.
- Finding out the business’s requirements and then translate that into a user friendly and responsive design. This can be by setting out story boards and brainstorming ideas.
- Being able to visualise and be certain of what you are after in terms of selling your service or product and how you want to differentiate your brand.
- Being clear of what you would like your design to consist of.
- Making critical and careful decisions throughout the testing process to ensure user satisfaction.
- Setting A/B split testing to test which page / design / functionality works the best. This testing can occur over several months.
- Evaluating the results to see how well the design achieves your specific goals.
- Creating a successful User Experience involves many steps including wireframing, prototyping, storyboarding and usability testing. User Experience is what leads users to go further into your website with ease and its end goal is to increase your websites conversion rates.
To know if your website is doing well in the User Experience side of things, there is something that measures a websites effectiveness called success metrics.
Success metrics are what people look at to find out if something needs to be improved on or not.These can include:
- Conversion Rates: The percentage of people who sign up to your newsletters, read your posts and / or become paying customers.
- Retention Rates: The percentage of people who continue being ‘a loyal customer’ - meaning repeat purchases, subscriptions etc.
- Form Completion Rates: This calculates who spends the time completing a form versus abandoning it half way through.
These metrics can help what specific areas need improvement on a website which can be easily quantified and tracked through software such as Google Analytics.
